Gray

Tom M. Gray was married twice. First, he married a red-headed school teacher from the Foss area. Her name is unknown at this time. The marriage could not have lasted very long, for Tom suspected that she was seeing someone else. He hired someone to follow her, and she was caught with another man in a palm thicket. Needless to say, he divorced her.

On October 2, 1906, he married Rachel Evelyn Copeland (born July 29, 1884, I.T.). Thomas and his family are listed on the 1910 Oklahoma census, living in the Goldsby Township with their two young sons, Willie and Sidney.

Tom and Rachel first lived in a half dugout (example) on a farm next to the land Tom eventually bought. Their first two sons were born there. Tom purchased the neighboring 180 acres. The house consisted of 2 rooms; years later when it was torn down it had 4 rooms with 2 big screened in porches.  In the 1930's, he bought 120 acres for $25 an acre.

It is unknown what happened to William Gray and his wife, Mary. Family tradition says that he died at 45(about 1913). Three of their children were living with relatives by 1910.

Minnie and her family are listed on the 1910 census in the Byars Township, District 182 in McClain County, Oklahoma. James occupation is ‘salesman in grocery store’; and Earl and Ruby were still living at home. William Gray’s daughter, Ina Bell is living with the Crabtree family.

Lillie and her family were still living in Comanche, Stephens County, Oklahoma in 1910. John’s occupation still had to do with stock. Gracie, Laura, Clara, Frankie, Annie and Mary are still living at home.

By 1910, the Starr family was living in the Lincoln Township in Comanche County. Mattie was still living with them. She was now 63 years of age. Two of William Gray’s children, Ernest and Willie are listed as members of this household. Also listed is Albert Anderson, hired hand. Phillip’s occupation is ‘teacher’ in a public school.

On the 1910 Census, it is indicated that Mattie had given birth to 6 children, with 3 still living, Tom, Ada, and Flora (Minnie).
